DELHI

The chapter in Delhi started in 2016 when a 24-hour lone walk was being attempted in the city. The politics of walking and the need for it, especially at night, was inspired deeply by the very active conversation around women safety in Delhi post the Nirbhaya case in 2012 and by the succinct articulation and assertion of the need to walk in Maya Krishna Rao's theatre piece - 'Walk'.

Since 2016, the practice has evolved, grown, learnt, fallen on its face and then picked itself up again. It has insisted on presenting itself on the streets of Delhi every month in a new neighbourhood - sometimes failing but often succeeding. Over the years several women have  walked the streets of the city. Over the years, a loose community of walkers has grown in the city, often collecting around a midnight walk - thinking and breathing together. Soaking in the Delhi night.

The walks are an act of solidarity - not just with each other but also with the city, for what is a city that cannot make space for its women?

We insist, we repeat, we practice.

We walk!
